Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Breath smell

Has anyone else had experience of what I can only describe as a 'vinegar' smell off your dogs saliva.I have noticed this from Nollaig the past few months and have mentioned to her vet but he didn't seem to know what it was?

About a month before Ren was officially determined to have AIHA, she had terrible breath. I mentioned this to my Vet at that time. My vet dismissed it as Ren needed a teeth cleaning. In hindsight, I now know that the odd breath odor was associated with AIHA. There were some other symptoms that I noticed also. Ren had a dark patch of skin on her stomach. I have since found out that was a bruise, which often happens in this disease. Ren also was standing oddly. I believe that she was having fatigue long before the tell tail symptoms arrived.

This may be something called Ketosis. A biochemical reaction creates acetone as a byproduct and it is excreted in the urine and the breath. It may smell something like nail polish.

High doses of prednisone cause the body to begin wasting muscle tissue, it is one of the unfortunate side effects of long term use. During this metabolic process, the body is in a sort of "starving" state and ketosis is usually associated with people who are chronically starved.

Check with your vet on this before taking my word for it. I suspect this is it, but I am not a clinician.

Probably the smell is not ketosis. Ketosis gives a sweet smell, like Juicy Fruit gum. Not a vinegar smell.

Ann,
You may be thinking of Ketoacidosis, which may cause a stronger fruity smell. This would be seen in diabetic patients. This is an extreme condition and is more serious than ketosis. See:

I can't comment on the vinegar breath smell, but I check my girl's breath everyday for signs of kidney problems.
