Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Brandy discovery

I was just trying to put together a complete picture of Brandy's past lab history and was SHOCKED and angry to discover a lab result from last year that was ignored by two vets. I had her to another vet for a consult re: Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Labs were done and they told me results were WNL. Results were also faxed to her routing vet. Today I requested those labs and found out ONE YEAR ago her platelets were 39 !!!! My poor Brandy has had Thrombocytopenia for a whole year and has been fighting to maintain a healthy body. No symptoms noted. Finally I now believe it all led to Evan's Syndrome and has left her fighting for her life and suffering the awful affects of the meds. I have cried to much lately and now I am furious but to no avail. Can't go back.

Just to update, Brandy has had a good day today and I credit her vet with making her more comfortable. She has been receiving accupuncture for arthritis for a year and her vet gave her a treatment during her visit for her labs yesterday. She was much calmer and did not exhibit any of the usual nighttime restlessness and anxiety of past two weeks. I know it is a bit controversial doing accupuncture during the crisis time but we gave it a try and it worked for us.

Once again, prayers to all of you out there caring for our furry friends in their time of need.
love and hugs to all

Sharon,

That is really tough news, I'm so sorry! I guess some vets just don't recognize the signs.

The important thing now is to focus on where things are at today and as tough as it is, try to forget the past. You have a great vet now who is getting you guys on the right track. And, it sounds like Brandy had a good day, that is wonderful news in and of itself. It keeps you going forward when they have a good day, and makes it all worth the fight!

Stay strong! Hugs to Brandy!

An update on Tiggs: I panicked a little today, his gums weren't looking as pink. PCV dropped slightly down from 37 to 34, but our vet said don't panic. He looks good, and he's acting good too. Even barking at some passers by. I guess it's normal for the numbers to fluctuate slightly?

Keep us posted on Brandy. It's too bad we can't post pics here, I'd love to see her! Send me an email if you can: melissalipani@hotmail.com.

Hang in there Sharon!
