Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Brandi is at the bridge

I just wanted to let you all know how much I thank you and appreciate the supports and prayers.

The vet called and said Brandi had went into cardiac arrest twice this morning and had to be resusitated so we immediately started that way. We got about half way there and she called again and said Brandi's heart failed again and they weren't able to bring her back.

They had her is a peaceful room to where I could say my last goodbye. I stayed with her a long time going back over our 4 years together, sang My Girl to her and just let her know how badly I will miss her forever more and how much she will always mean to me and her impact on my life. I told her about every dog I know that I have had and friends (including cyber friends) who have dogs at the bridge that will be there for her. I kissed her, hug her, got one last deep smell of her sweet body and left the room.

I asked the vet's if an autopsy could be done to help research for THEM (not me) in the hopes that they could learn something about this horrifying disease that could possibly answer some questions and help others. She said yes and they would handle all of it and it would be about 2 weeks before I would get her cremains back as I chose to cremate her and place her next to my beloved Cassie.

At this moment, I am at peace, but gut wrenching sobs occur at anytime.

So with that, I again thank you everyone and I hope that even with this bad news you will have a merry Christmas.

With great admiration, gratitude and thankfulness to all of you,

Teresa and Brandiwine "Brandi" 2-13-04 to 12-25-08

Teresa,

I am so incredibly sorry. Words cannot even express how sad I am for the loss of Brandi.

You gave her so much love and fighting spirit since she was diagnosed, and were an incredible advocate for her. I know that she knows she was loved with all of your heart.

Now she is pain and suffering free, running wild with all of the others- no pills, no blood transfusions, just peace and good times.

I pray that as time goes on, you too will find peace- I think it's a wonderful gift that you have given consent for Brandi's body to be examined- I hope that they can learn something valuable to share with others fighting our battle.

All of our love,

melissa and tiggs

Teresa,
I am so sorry that your sweet girl is gone. As hard as we fight sometimes we just can't save them. Brandi is now free of this lifes atruggles and will watch over you from the bridge. I also had my dog autopsied in the hopes that they could find something useful towards beating this awful disease. It just never seems fair when you fight so hard that you can't beat this. I think these dogs are sent to us because we will love and fight for them no matter what. You were such a good doggy Mom.

Teresa, I'm so sorry for your loss. You did everything you could for Brandi and I'm sure she knew how much you loved her. I hope in time, you'll be able to think of all the good times you had together and that those memories will bring you comfort rather than the immense, hollow sadness that you must be feeling right now. Please take care of yourself. Hugs to you and your family.

Remember Me

Remember me when the flowers bloom
Early in the Spring
Remember me on sunny days
to the fun that summer brings

Remember me in the fall
As you walk through the leaves of gold
And in the wintertime remember me
in the stories that are told.

But most of all, remember
Each day right from the start
I will be forever near
For I will live within your heart.

Dear Teresa - I've been away a few days and only just read that your dear Brandi lost her fight against IMHA. The two of you fought so hard -- you were so committed to each other -- but sometimes, it just isn't enough and this damned disease takes another beloved dog from another devastated pet parent. Please know that you did all that you could to save Brandi, and she knew that. She is in a better place now, where she is healthy and joyful.

I hope that the many memories of your wonderful life with Brandi will comfort you as you deal with the grief ahead. Our beloved dogs brought us so much joy in our lives, that it is not fair to remember them in sadness or reduce their wonderful lives down to those last dark days. The poem that Laurie posted, Remember Me, is so fitting for how we have to put our losses in perspective -- our beloved dogs are always with us.

Please take care and let us know how you are doing. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Each time I hear of another passing I renews the pain
that I feel for not only my loss but for all the other out there that have gone thru the same thing.

My thoughts are with you in the hopes that it will help.

Teresa,
I am so grieved to hear about Brandi. This is not how it should have turned out. But you did your very best to help her and that is what us mere mortals can do.

Please accept my deepest sympathy.
