Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Brandi - Evans Syndrome

Hi, new to this forum. My 4 year old spayed female cocker spaniel Brandi was recently dx with Evans Syndrome. Currently she is in critical care at the ER vet. She was first dx with ITP in October. Someone at another forum said to watch for IMHA as it sometimes follows ITP. Sure enough, it did. I noticed on Wed that Brandi was more lethargic and had very pale gums. I took her to my vet where a cbc showed 12 on the pcv and 13,000 platelets. We rushed to the er where she was given blood. Her pcv rose to 22. The past couple of days she's remained at 18. Her platelets are rising and were 135,000 at last check. She is currently on pred, azathioprine and atopica. Plus meds for her tummy.

Coincidentally this is not the first time I've visited this forum. I lost Cassie, my 14 year old cocker in 2004 to lymphosarcoma. This is when I really started researching illnesses that could affect the cocker breed and how I found out about AIHA and ITP or Evans Syndrome. I've read so much here and my heart's been broken several times reading about losses. This is such a cruel disease. I only hope that I caught it in time and get my girl back. She is the light of my life as was Cassie. I can't take another heartbreak. I have lost a total of 3 dogs in the last 4 years.

I'll take all the support I can get and appreciate it so much.

The er vet is now the 4th vet I've dealt with since the onset of ITP. I've even talked to Dr Dodds. I just got so confused as some said do this, others said do that. I look forward to learning more here.

Any advice is appreciated. I pray for Brandi and include the pups here as well.

I just wanted to give my support and healing vibes. My dog Willow also has IMT. Fortunately, she did not develop IMHA along with it. But, it is a very similar disease treated the same way. At her worst, Willow's platelets were only 12,000.

Hi Teresa,

I'm really sorry to hear about Brandi (and I'm so sad to hear about all of the babies you have lost in the last few years).

It sounds as though you are in good hands and Brandi is getting what she needs. You guys will be in our thoughts and we're hoping for a swift recovery. Hopefully, you have visited Joanne's Meisha's hope site, it will give you so much information, but most importantly HOPE!

Hang in there, and keep us posted.

Teresa,
I am sorry that Brandi has been diagnosed with Evans syndrome. You have come to the right place for support.
It is hard right now I know but try to hold on to the hope that Brandi could join the dogs that have beaten this.

My almost 5 month old english bulldog, Koa, is at the vet as I type getting a blood transfusion. I am so worried about our sweet, new baby. I took him to the vet today thinking he must have had an injured leg, as he could barely walk. His blood tests showed an extremely low red blood cell count and a very low platelet count. The transfusion will buy him a few days with the hope that an underlying cause will be diagnosed and can be treated with medication. We are praying for him and a recovery so he can come home to his family. He's so sweet and full of love and my family and I just treasure having his sweet face around. He loves us all equally...even my 3 year old that he loves to wrestle with! I'm trying to learn more about this disease as I wait for the vet to call. I will keep all of your sweet pets in my prayer too.

We just lost our 5 year old Beagle Clyde to Evan's Syndrome so my wife and I know exactly what you are going through. We noticed him acting weak on January 2, 2009 and took him to the vet. His RBC count was at 7 so he was in dier need of an imediate transfusion. We had the transfusion done and his count on 1/3 went up to 22 and he was walking around about 6 hours later we received a call from the vet and said that his system was destroying the new cells and that another round would not help.

We arrived at the vet and went into a room and they brought Clyde in, he saw us and wagged his tail 3 times. I beleive that is all he had left to let us know he loved us and it was time to say good bye. We love him and mss him very much.

Hope Brandi's story ends up with a happier ending than Clyde's

Our dog Max was diagnosed with Evans Syndrome on January 2nd. He has been on meds and on January 5 had a blood transfusion. Our vet was extremely worried. We went back to the vet yesterday for another blood check and there was some improvement in his red blood cell and platelet count. Our vet is hopeful. I am worried but hopeful. I would love to see my baby reach 5 years old next month. This is so frustrating and frightening.
