Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Boogie update - 4/21

Well, Boogie was at 37% 3 days post transfusion last Monday, then 30% on Friday. Today, she was down to 25%. Her vet and I are very discouraged. She said she would like to try Human Immunoglobulin, but she said she can't get any. Everywhere she checks, they say it's all going over to Iraq. So far, we'll continue on all the meds and hope for the best. Next blood test is on Thursday. Boogie is so very weak. It breaks my heart.

Can you get a homeopathic consult? I don't know if it helped Choe during his battle with the bumpy numbers, but I did give him chinese remedies and his count did rise. The chinese remedies are worth a try. Jan

Jan,

I'll ask my regular vet tomorrow. I know she has experience with Chinese herbs. Boogie sees her twice a week for acupuncture. I don't know if that helps either, but I'm trying everything.

Sue,
We were about to use this for Chance and our vet had some to *give* to us. Seems the local prison doctor must keep it in stock, and as it nears expiration, he donates it to the vet clinic. Check with any local prisons to see if they have some kind of program like this. Apparently they are not allowed to hand it off for human use, but giving to vets is considered "tossing it out."

This is, according to Schalm's Veterinary Hematology, something that should be tried after other failed treatment protocols. It "can work" but it can also cause the host to possibly develop antibodies to the human antigen. Dr. Dodds advised me to hold off until I had tried the cyclosporine. Epogen is another similar treatment from human anemia that can help.
