| My 10 pound female spayed dachshund, Boogie was diagnosed with AIHA three weeks ago. For the first couple of weeks her RBC count was in the 15 to 20 range. Last week her count dropped to 10 and she received a blood transfusion. After the transfusion, her count was 22. Now this week her count is 16. We are seeing an internist and she wants to again test her blood on Monday. If it is down again, she will do another transfusion and/or change her meds. Boogie is on the following meds: 5 mgs prednisone twice a day 15 mgs azathioprine every other day (was every day for 10 days) 0.1 ml neoral twice a day After reading that azathioprine can take up to six weeks to kick in, I am wondering why the vet has decreased it to every other day. Like every one else, I am extremely frustrated. This is a horrible disease. It sure wreaks such havoc on our lives. It does help to discover that we are not alone in this fight. Thanks for listening. | Sue, I am sorry that Boogie has joined the list. I don't have much to add but I too wonder why they stopped the Azath so soon did she have problems with it?. The most important aspect of this fight is to have a Vet who is well versed in treating this and one who believes that it can be beat. Finding this board has helped everyone who is in this battle. I don't know how any of us would haved coped without the tireless efforts of Joanne Dickson to help us understand this terrible disease and all the people whos share their experiences. You do want to talk to your Doctor about something for her stomach protection and aspirin or something in case of clots. Keep us posted. Penny |

| I emailed Dr. Dodds about Boogie. I told her about Boogie's meds. Dr. Dodds replied to me pretty quickly. She did not comment on the reduction of the Azath. I mentioned the name of the internist we are seeing. Dr. Dodds knows her and said that she is very capable. That made me feel good. Dr. Dodds sent me a copy of her treatment protocol. I plan to bring a copy to the internist on Monday. Also, tomorrow night Boogie and I are going to see her regular vet for some acupuncture. I figure it can't hurt. Sue |
