Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bonnie's sisters

Bonnie (Rottweiler) has two sisters that live with me also. Annie from an earlier litter-she's nearly 5. and Itsy who is Bonnie's littermate (2 1/2 years) same sire and Dam as Annie

Wed we took Annie and Itsy for Haemobartonella canis/mycoplasma haemocanis PCR tests to make sure that they too were not carrying this RARE to our area of the country blood parasite (which was partially a trigger to Bonnie's AIHA)

Talked to the vet this am and the PCR test for the haemobartonella canis/mycoplasma haemocanis is not yet back. Possibly this aftern or Mon being the latest they expect it

But the CBC/Chem panels are done and I have the verbal results from my vet (he said he put a copy in the mail to me yesterday)

Annie is 100% fine

Itsy is fine EXCEPT her red blood cell count is a bit low. 37 and above being normal. Itsy is 34.1. You could have felt my stomach drop when he said that

IF the PCR test comes back negative then he wants Itsy back 9/8 for a hematacrit to recheck this level and make sure she is not dropping (she is in the middle of a big bagged up false pregnancy and that could be the cause but........)

IF the PCR test is positive he wants her on doxy asap and back in the office 9/1 for a new hemtacrit

he said if ANYTHING about her normal behavior changes to get her back asap. Since Itsy is an activity freak that should be easy to watch for

I am so very very scared. Itsy and Bonnie both picked up ticks out back this year. That is the only common factor between them re ticks/fleas

Annie has not had any ticks this year. She had A flea a couple times from the training center but no ticks THIS year

I am just terrified. I cannot even tell you how scared. I started crying even before I got off the phone with the vet

I am so sorry to hear this. You certainly have had your trials this year. You are a good mommie and I am confident that you are doing all the right things.

You have a good vet that is doing the right tests and is planning ahead on how to handle this situation if there is a positive. You are lucky to have him as your vet. Try not to worry so much until the tests come back.

Keep a small comb handy and in the evening go through their coats with it, looking for ticks and fleas. This will be calming to both you and Itsy and Bonnie. If you find a tick, remove it with tweezers or with a gloved hand. Carefully put the tweezers as close as possible to the skin (to get around the head if possible) and pull straight back slowly and surely without twisting or yanking. Put the ticks in a cotton ball with alcohol and save it for your vet in a container. Wash the spot and your hands and tweezer very carefully.

I am so sorry, I meant to type Itsy and Annie, please forgive my mistype, it was not intentional.

It's ok

The funny thing is my yard is about the size of two jumbo sized SUVs and has NO grass at all just some bushes at the edge

So the fact that we have had ticks at all is bizarre. Bonnie had one just a couple? weeks before her disgnosis of AIHA but had had another one earlier in the year. Itsy has had maybe? 4? this year

Annie none and their elderly (almost 12) sire none at all and ME one

I am praying for two negative PCR tests and that Itsy's slight PCV/HCT dip is just related to her current huge false pregnancy

Is Canine Red Cell similar to Pettinic?
Red Cell's ingredients are:
A feed supplement for dogs for use as a supplemental source of iron, vitamins, and minerals. Specially formulated for hunting and field dogs, racing greyhounds, show dogs, old and debilitated dogs, and puppies. Is beef and liver flavored. Ingredients: Water, ferric ammonium citrate, ammonium hydroxide, xanthan gum, zinc sulfate,Vitamin E supplement, sodium saccharin, citric acid, Vitamin A supplement, choline chloride, potassium sorbate, liver concentrate, sodium benzoate, niacinamide, manganese sulfate, potassium chloride, copper sulfate, thiamin hydrochloride, Vitamin D3 supplement, artificial color, beef peptone, cobalt sulfate, riboflavin, d-Calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, sodium bicarbonate, sodium selenite, Vitamin B12 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex

also someone in Canada told me that they cannot get either but dr Dodds told them to give B12, folic acid and 100-200 mg iron once a day for a 60lb dog

Is this an adequate substitution for Pettinic? (or Red cell)

Thanks everyone. Itsy SEEMS fine other then a slightly paler pink then normal tongue- it's been that way a few weeks so guess this is why

I'm REALLY neurotic now because Itsy just had a 50/50 sloppy/solid poo. Now she did go to class Wed night for the first time and was exposed to lots of noise, dogs in her face (literally licking her face) and dog germs but since Bonnie started the same way..........

Rob wants me to schedule a hematacrit test for Itsy next Wed no matter what her PCR test says. I think he's as scared as I am

BOTH girls are negative for haemobartonella canis/mycoplasma haemocanis!

Still does not explain why Itsy was anemic...

We have an appt for her on Wed for a new hematacrit

When vet called on Sat he had us put her on doxy (200 mg twice a day- she's 67 lbs 22 1/4" tall) just because his gut said we should and I agree. Rob however thinks the doxy is part of what caused Bonnie's death or at least her ulcer and non eating. The vet thinks it was the pred though...........

So far Itsy has had 5 doses of Doxy with a Pepcid complete 1 hour before meal and doxy (started Sat) and so far so good. Bonnie puked the very first day
