Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bonnie is gone

sat pm she started acting a bit dumpy, Sunday Aug 1 she was not too interested in food but still playing and crittering. Monday she quit eating but since she was still in good spirits and carrying HER ball around we force fed her to keep her strength up. Tues pm she was a bit dumpier but still ok, we figured the heat and humidy return was bothering her and we had a vet appt today. At bedtime she was panting and hot but settled. She then got up several times to drink and when I took her out to potty she was VERY interested in chasing toads

When I got up today at 5:15 for the day she stumbled out of her crate and wobbled to the door looking wide eyed and paniced. I held her tight and her heart was racing out of control. After a few seconds she seemed calmer, went out to pee and came in and collapsed. About every 15 min she had heart racing episodes where she would be scared and after each one she was duller.

Shortly after 8 when the vet opened we raced up; though not to try to save her life but to put her down and save her from anything more. Throughout the entire ride Bonnie was limp like sleeping but not. Just as we pulled into the vet drive she had a big cardiac event due to lack of oxygen and died in our arms

The vets are firmly beliveling that this was a result of her AIHA (a LARGE portion of these dogs die from cardiac complications) HOWEVER because I have a sister or two that someday I might want to breed and because she has many young siblings we are having a necropsy done to make sure.

Update to say_ I got an email from the vets-ALREADY! they said Bonnie died of complications of the AIHA. She also had a stomach ulcer inspite of the sucralfate and Pepcid but the AIHA was her killer

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. You took such good care of her and sometimes they can't be saved no matter how hard we try.

You will be Bonnie's last memory as she died in the arms of the one who loved her the most and that is your final gift to your sweet Bonnie.

In time I hope you will be able to celebrate her life and remember all the joy she brought to you.

Rest in peace Bonnie, you have earned your wings.

Sending hugs and prayers,

I am so sorry for your loss. It is heartbreaking to lose a dog to this disease after you have tried so hard to save them. I hope the happier memories of your girl will eventually block out the memories of these awful times. I can on most days now smile when I think of my girl and all the joy she brought into my life. I hope that you may find comfort in your good memories.

Dear Diane,

I am so sorry to hear that Bonnie did not make it.
You both fought so hard, and you were with Bonnie when she passed.

She is now running free at the Rainbow Bridge with so many darling IMHA dogs there to greet her.

Our deepest sympathies on your loss,

Sam & Millie.
