Hi, how many blood transfusions are typically required before the effect of the steroids kicks in?

Hi Toby. There is no set answer to that. Each dog responds differently to the steroids and the transfusions are used to buy them time until the drugs start to work. My dog had pure red cell aplasia which is a very aggressive form of AIHA. It destroys the red cells at the bone marrow level as they are being produced. Hope this helps you. Take care. deb

Toby, Yes, a dog can have multiple transfusions. However, every transfusion after the first one has the risk of possible transfusion reaction if the vet is not careful to match the donor and the donee carefully. If this is not possible then high quality universal donor blood should be found, DEA 4. Dr. Dodds organization provides safe universal donor blood. www.hemopet.org my best patrice

Even with sufficient blood typing and matching...trasnfusions always run the risk of reaction. The more you do, the higher the risk. They should be done only when absolutely necessary with these dogs.
