Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bloating

My 5 year old Dachshund was diagnosed 9/27 with hemolytic autoimmune. The vet put her on 10mg of Prednisone 2x a day, and 25mg of Danazol 2x a day.

I am having to force feed her, but she will drink water on her own. The first couple of days, she would vomit the minute food hit her stomach. Today is the first day she has kept it down.

I have noticed that her stomache is very bloated - is this typical of this disease? Side effects of the meds? All of the above?

I hope I am doing the right thing by keeping her alive.... she looks so pitiful, and my heart is breaking for her.

The bloated appearance is because of the Prednisone. It will go away once she is weaned down or taken off in the coming months, but it is a side effect just like alot of water drinking.

Keep your spirits up and be patient. My GSD puppy Sofie was diagnosed on Christmas Eve day of 2007. She has been med free for over 5 months and doing great, I am showing her and you would never know she had been close to dying the first few weeks.

Two weeks after my dog Brandy was put on Prednisone and Cyclosporine, her abdomine became terribly bloated. She could hardly move and was in pain. She also became very lethargic again. The prednisone tends to cause the patient to retain fluid and also can tend to decrease the liver function. Brandy got so bad at this point we again thought we were going to lose her. The vet gave her a shot ( a diuretic) and dropped the dosage of the prednisone a bit. Thankfully, her blood count had been holding steady and had increased a couple of points before this so lowering the prednisone was the right choice. The vet also prescribed Vetmedin, Marin and Zentonil at this point to help her liver and heart function better. I also started to give her a whole food holistic seaweed/algae supplement called BioPrep. It is amazing the change this had on her. /within 24 hours, she was like a new dog. Her blood count has continued to rise and is at 39. We just have to keep a close eye on her liver. We have since decreased her prednisone again and are hoping that we will be able to do the same with the cyclosporine.

Good luck to you!!!
