Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bladder infection for Kahlu

I am so thankful I found this board! If I would be on my own and not have read a lot of the archive posts, I would be majorly freaking out right now. So i am freaking out only a tiny bit.... Kahlu's peeing habits have changed over the last few days, peeing more often and shorter. I started to suspect a bladder infection, because it has been mentioned on here. So off to the vet we go and the test confirmed my suspicion. There was even a bit of blood in the urine, which of course concerned me. The vet is confident, the Antibiotics will clear it up fairly quick. Kahlu has been so much more energetic lately, I guess the Thyroid meds have kicked in. And now this..... I know considering everything else this is a small setback and easy to cure, but still. I hope it will not effect his CBC next Monday.
Last night I also learned something more about the Milk Thistle. It was one of Patrice's older posts. If you give the regular people Milk Thistle it has to be pulse dosed. meaning having a few days in between that you don't give it. Other ways it stops working. Patrice suggested to leave out the S days. I thought that was very important info. Patrice, do you want to move to Vancouver Island? properties are cheap right now!

Glad to hear you found Kahlus infection, I think we know our dogs habits and bodies better than our own!.

Interesting about the milk thistle, hadnt hear about that aspect. Thanks for bringing that up. I did read on a people site you should stop it for a week every few months.

I am wondering if this is why Wylies ALT hasn't come down like it has in the past when we reduce her pred. She has been on the people thistle for almost year and then I stopped it over a week ago for her to rest. My vet said he wanted her on dog thistle so I just started that this week.

Brigitte,

Sorry to hear about the bladder infection, but it is very common as you have now read. One thing that I think I read early on, and I'm swearing by it, is adding a handful of dried cranberries to Tiggs' food. Dr. Dodds confirmed this in an email I sent her, and Josh and a few others swore by it as well. If you haven't already, start putting them in. They coat the bladder wall to prevent further distress. Of course, it won't help an already present infection, but it will help in the future. Knock on wood, Tiggs never got one!
