Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Billy's visit to the vet's

Hi

I saw my regular vet today (thank goodness), he thinks it is a bacterial infection in his system and his spleen is enlarged so we have got some more AB's, had his blood taken again and we have to go back on Friday.

The calcium deposits are getting infected, and he has them on his w**ly, inside his back legs and his front legs. He says that his swelling on his elbow had been due to calcium forming on his ligament.

I've got to keep his feet dry, so he's back to wearing his socks in the house and I've to get him some wellies for outdoors (also to prevent frostbite!) He did say that if it is SLE that the
prognosis isn't good, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

I mentioned about his right eye rolling on Saturday and he asked if he'd been acting peculiar (which he hasn't - no more than normal!!) because of the possibility of blood clots.

I had a little complain about the vet I saw on Friday, but I don't know if anything will be said to him.

So Billy gets to carry on fighting the good fight - he's obviously changed his mind again.

Billy thanks you all for your kind thoughts and prayers, and advice to his numpty mummy.

Hi Steph, glad to see that things seem stable atm, hopefully the other vet WILL have their tealeaves read, the one who I saw when Holly was ill was just awful, no people skills at all yet the one I see for my cat is so lovely and just wish he'd been on duty at the time! Anyway I do hope things get better and you are not a numpty mummy just a concerned one, we all love our pets dearly, some more so than we do some humans, lol!

Steph,
It might not hurt to get a specific culture done. Ruth who posts here about her Newfie had a heck of a time until she found the right antibiotic for the specific infection that her dog had. It is unfortunate that Vets/Doctors don't seem to be open to actually learning about the history of the patient or actually looking at alternative things. I am glad you got to see Billy's regular Vet. Is Billy taking aspirin?

Hi Keri

Can you imagine if I'd put him to sleep on Friday like the pr*t said, knowing that I'd not given him another chance.

When I asked for the AB's, he only gave me enough till today and said to bring him back Monday to see my usual vet and his exact words were "if **** isn't here, see me - as I have a vested interest in this case" I'd never seen the man before!!!! I did't have that much faith in my vet in the beginning, but at least he listens to me.

You pay so much for the treatment, tests etc. - Billy isn't insured so we're in thousands now - why don't they let you go on your instincts now and again, and if you're wrong so be it.

There now - feel better now.

Hi Penny

No, he's isn't taking aspirin at the moment - I did think that I would ask on Friday when we go back.
