Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Billy's news

Hi

Thought I'd let you know how Billy is getting on.

As you know I took him back to the vets on 23 December, his wee went orange again, his gums were pale and yellow and some of calcium deposits had come of his spine in the night. He had been on antibiotics for a month, his liver wasn't swollen anymore but there was a fear of an internal bleed. All his other vitals were good and strong.

On Xmas Day he was bleeding from his "butt cheek" so I cleaned him up to look and it looked like calcium deposits lifting off from there, so I rang the vet he said keep it clean and put sudocrem on it.

Boxing Day - Trip to the emergency vet. He had had an anal gland abcess burst. He had not shown any signs of a problem with his anal glands at all. He went to the vets again two days later for it cleaning and ended up with a hole in his butt cheek about 4cm wide and 1.5cm deep.

Anyway, he got more AB's for his bum and stayed on the ones for his liver. Slowly his wound has started to repair itself, he's really fed up now cos he hasn't been able to play ball since before Xmas.

We've been going to the vets once a week since this happened and he had his bloods done last Thursday 08.01. The results came back on Monday and he was PCV 41 and RBS 5.12%, so there was a big yahoo all round.

So we've reduced his pred again, he is now taking 5mg pred per day and Azi 25mg eod, plus his ab's twice a day. He going to the vets on Friday for his wound looking at.

He's been ever so good about his wound - he's learnt to come in from when he's been to the toilet and stand on a towel to have it flushed out with salt water (Not keen though!! - who would be?)

His hair is starting to come out where the calcium deposits are, so they are breaking up. He's a lot more mobile and last week even managed to clean his own bits and pieces (if you know what I mean!) so his back must be less stiff now as he hasn't done this since about August last year.

My message to you all struggling at the moment - Keep going, try to be strong and keep the faith.

Steph,
Glad to hear Billy is doing better. Our poor doggies get put through so much and it is always good to hear that they are doing well.

Steph,
Great news on the PCV for Billy! Hopefully his wound on his butt will heal up with the meds.
