Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Billybob update

Hi

Billybob has been back to the vets today for his bloods taking. He is currently taking 15mg of pred twice a day and azathioprine once every other day. He's been on this dose for a month. His vet today lowered his pred to 10mg twice a day and kept the azathioprine same to try and give his system a bit of a rest. When his results come back. he is looking at trying cyclosporine as he has seen some good results with this, he did say though that it varied from dog to dog so I'm not getting my hopes up too early.

I have been reading about this and there seems to be a lot of side effects with it, has anyone had any trouble with it? I don't want to put him through more than he has to at the moment.

He is still very tired, laboured breathing but is still eating, drinking and toileting as normal, although he has lost the knack of being able to cock his leg and does such huge wees that he permanently has wet feet (might have to buy him some wellies!) so I would like to try another med just to see if there is any improvement.

I have looked on Meisha's site, but first hand experience would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Steph
Glad to BillyBob is holding steady and eating, some of his symptoms maybe a result of the Predisone.

When Ginger had her relapse her PCV would not get above 28 after two months of the predisone and Azthioprine. She was then put on Cyclosprine in addition to the Pred. (was reduced) and the Azth. and after four weeks of 200 mg a day (she weighs about 75 lbs) her PCV rose to 38. Ginger is one of the lucky ones as she has had no side effects that I am aware of and she seem perfectly fine. We are in the process of reducing some of her meds. slowly.

Cyclosprine is very expensive and it cost me $156.00 for 30 pills that last about two weeks, however based on her PCV and how Ginger is acting it is worth every penny.

Remember the Cyclosprine will take time to have an effect.

Best of Luck to BillyBob,
