Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Billy update 05.01.09

Hi all

Sorry I haven't posted since before Xmas, but the festivities got in the way (and my husband, lol).

As I posted earlier, I took Billy to the vets on 23.12 cos his wee was wrong etc. but was given the all clear.

On Xmas Day, my husband noticed he was bleeding around his butt cheek. So I clean it and some of the calcium deposits he had developed around there had lifted off, and in the centre there was a yellow head (like a boil). So I rang the vet who advised washing with salt water and applying nappy rash cream as a barrier. Anyway he went out for a poo and it burst leaving a small hole, like a pin prick.

It continued weeping and bleeding so on Boxing Day (26.12) I took him to the emergency vet who cleaned it more vigorously, and she said that it look like an anal glands abcess that had burst, but he hadn't shown any signs of trouble with his glands at all. He hasn't been able to lick his bottom or scoot as he couldn't bend his back. So we got some extra AB's.

I cleaned it every day until 29.12 when the vets opened again and took him back. Our regular vet cleaned it again and left him with an open wound in his butt cheek about 4cm in diameter and about 2cm deep - down to the flesh!

I've cleaned it every day except for yesterday as he is healing nicely and is now forming a scab over it. He's been back to the vets twice and is going again on Wednesday this week to have another look and have his blood done.

Again, he's been brilliant with it - he knows when he goes out to the toilet he has to come in and stand on his towel for his bottom washing! We've had to turn all our rugs over the wrong way because when he sits down he had been leaving a mark, but it's a small price to pay.

So my Xmas was spent staring at the bottom of a dog, the things we have to do for these babies lol!!

I'll let you know how we get on at the vets.

Glad his bum is healing up! Poor guy, that's an unfortunate location- imagine how he felt having everyone staring at it all day! Hopefully he has a good sense of humor :) Sounds like he's quite a champ.
