WBCs are way down, HCT is pretty stable for two weeks, and retics are steady for two weeks at about 106000. HOPEFULLY next week will see the HCT and RBC go UP! Any thoughts?? Am I missing something?? | Sally, Yes you are correct. The moderate regenerative response of 106,000 reticulocytes shows up in several values of your recent CBC. These cells are immature red blood cells that are released early from the bone marrow in response to a request from body cells to have more oxygen. They still contain the RNA from their development period. This is seen inside the cell as a clump of blueish material. It makes the cells larger than regular RBC and a different color. The automated laser analyzer sees them as "polychromatic" (different colors other than red) and of many different sizes "anisocytosis." The "M" values will also echo this, they measure the size and content of red blood cells. So MCV is mean corpuscle volume, and it shows that the mean average of the cells is larger than normal (because of the RNA). Within about 3-5 days the cells will drop the RNA and the number of RBC red blood cells will RISE and the reticulocyte numbers will go DOWN. Spherocytes are generally, at this point, just worn out red blood cells that have been destined for destruction at 120 days and the spleen did an incomplete job at doing that. So it has a "bite" taken out of it. You may see these numbers bounce around a bit for a month or so. Bentley has been very ill and it takes the body a bit of time to settle into the groove. Please don't be alarmed at small changes from report to report. Pay attention to good nutrition, clean fresh water, uninterrupted sound sleep and only moderate exercise. Visitors are probably not a good idea right now either. I am sure that you have the urge to do things like give him a good bath and grooming but hold off a bit on that too. my best patrice |
