Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Bella - Update

First I want to thank you all for your positive responses. Reading them have made me feel so much better. Now for the update - On Friday I took Bella to our vet for a PCV recheck. It was 6. She did not consider this to be a change but she was extremely concerned at how low. I again mentioned getting Bella a transfusion and she said if we were going to do it, we needed to do it right away. We brought her to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and on Saturday she was transferred to the Internal Medicine dept and given a transfusion. She immediately did better. Her PCV rose to 17. They also did an ultrasound and found a possible gall bladder infection. They also suspect Babesia because she is a pitbull and in pitbulls this disease is transmitted transplacentally and can lay dormant for years. We will not have that result for a couple of more days. She also had strange fluid in her stomach that we are waiting for results on. They wanted to run a bone marrow test because she is not regenerating. We opted not to have that test done right now and instead wait to see if the Pred will work. We brought her home tonight and she is looking so much better. However, as we do not yet have a definitive diagnosis - whether primary or secondary IMHA - we are guarded. We need to follow up for a PCV with our vet in 3-4 days and with the internist for an ultrasound in 10 days. She may also need another transfusion at some point. I am more hopeful now than I was on Friday. We just need the drugs to do their thing!

This is all so sudden for us and very scary. Your responses to my original post truly boosted my spirits. Thanks!

Dear Tracy,
I am so very sorry to hear about the difficulty you are having right now with Bella. If this is babesiosis, you will have success treating it with Imizol if this is a newer infection. My friend Gil has a wonderful website devoted to tick diseases and here is the link to the page on Babesiosis. I hope you are able to use this information to your benefit. If you are interested, at the bottom of each page is a link to join the Tick-L list, a group of folks devoted to helping dog owners that are dealing with tick diseases.
