Hi! I wanted to ask people in the San Francisco Bay Area if they knew of any petsitter or boarding facility that would take in a dog with AIHA/Evans Syndrome. I am not planning any time away from Casper but I figured I should have a backup plan in case I am called away on an emergency. Or if any of you want to do a pet sitting exchange, that would be good, too.

Leslie... I had to board Daisy during the summer because our son's wedding was in San Diego. I left her at her at San Mateo Animal Hospital. Her vet's office does limited boarding. This is the vet that diagnosed the AIHA, but referred me to a group of specialists, Vetinary Medical Associates for treatment. San Mateo Animal Hospital took good care of her. Being very anal about Daisy's medications, I put the proper doses of her Immuran, Prednisone, Pepcid AC, Milk Thistle etc. in small glasine bags with the date and time the meds were to be given. One bag for every AM and PM per day. It wasn't that I didn't trust them, but I didn't want to leave anything to chance. I called several times from San Diego and they assured me she was fine.

Hi -- I think my vet would board -- Bishop Ranch Vet center in San Ramon. They are the ones who pulled Penny through her crisis. You might want to call and talk to them... We haven't boarded Penny since she became ill, but we will have to eventually -- a pet sitter won't work because she still needs to pee frequently even though we are decreasing the prednisone. I like the idea of preparing each dose ahead of time... Christine

How do you handle the possibility of boarding an aiha dog that is not able to have shots any longer? Just wondering, as a vet clinic with boarding must have a few sick pooches with diseases that are contagious.

I don't live in the Bay area but wanted to add my 2 cents... I have hired a pet sitter on several occasions since my Liesl was dignosed with AIHA who actually stays in my home while I'm gone. She gave the meds when she was still taking them and knows where I can be reached as well as the name of my vet and their number. I've told her to watch Liesl very carefully and what to look for. That way Liesl is not around other animals that might be sick and does not have the stress of being at the vet's since she hates going there. I live in a retirement area so it was easy to find a retired lady who would do this. You can check on your vet's bulletin board or look in the local paper or phone book to find someone. I've been quoted from $50. down to $25. per day for overnights. It has given me great peace of mind knowing someone was with Liesl 24 hours a day when I've had to be gone. In a big city like San Francisco I bet there are alot of petsitters. Hope this helps.
