| Bailey had her blood work this morning. PCV is now 26, compared to 11 last month. She is on 10mg. pred and 25 mg. azathioprine 1X daily. The vet has extended her visits to quarterly instead of almost weekly. Looks promising so far. I know this illness isn't always consistent so I'm vigilant to watch her color (guns, eyes, muzzle). |

| Al, It is good to hear that Bailey is doing better. However with a PCV of only 26 (normal is in a range from 37-55) I personally would be very concerned about the vet visits being extended to quarterly. At a PCV of 26, in my opinion, a dog with AIHA/IMHA should still be seeing the vet very often. One needs to know if the PCV is staying stable or increasing or decreasing. This info can only be learned by frequent blood work being done. Based on this blood work, decisions need to made as to whether or not the meds need to remain the same, or be lowered or raised. With my Meisha, we only went to quarterly vet visits/blood checks after she had been in remission with normal PCV's for a over a year. Far, far too many vets do not montior AIHA/IMHA dogs often enough and in my opinin that is a huge mistake. You might want to seriously consider seeing the vet for blood work much sooner then quarterly. If one has been going every week, one can consider going every other week. As the dog improves then the vet visits can perhaps be streached out to monthly. In the nearly 10 years my Meisha lived with AIHA we never went longer then 3 months between vet visits/blood checks, even when she was in a long term remission. With more frequent vet visits one can catch a problem that may develop before it gets too servre. If all is going well, one has peace of mind. |
