Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Back on Pred- Choe

Isn't it always something! Choe experienced a sudden back injury, which is not that uncommon for dachshunds. But he was doing so well for quite some, enjoying life and mostly recovered from the Frontline flea control product pesticide poisoning. He is under a vet's care for this newest injury and we're not sure of the extent of the disc inflammation. He is not a happy camper at this juncture. I feel so badly that he is in pain. We are taking the conservative approach right now with crate rest, pred and pain meds. The pred regimin is only for a few weeks, but natch I am concerned that after almost three years of baby steps in ever so slowly weaning off...he is now back on for a very different reason. Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar situation and did it have any effect on the prior continuity of high count RBC/PCV readings. Thanks.

Oh, poor Choe! You two will get through this, I know it! I'm sure that the weening process will be quite similar, just go slowly. You two take care!

Hi Jan,
I am sorry to hear of Choe's recent back injury. I have a theory that any dog who experiences IMHA/IMT should be exempt from any further health problems.

About one year after my dog Benson was weaned off his IMHA meds (pred and imuran), he was diagnosed with disc disease. This was not the result of a sudden injury but rather a longterm problem. He was seen by a neurologist at the vet hospital. We tried crate rest, painkillers, and pred. Eventually he had disc surgery to address the problem. Unfortunately several months after surgery, he was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy which resulted in hind quarter paralysis.

Throughout his many treatments, I made very sure that the vets kept IMHA in mind. I read everything to check for side effects. I would not allow some painkillers and would insist on others. Benson did very well with pred and the other pain meds. His pvc remained stable and high through the treatments.

I also worked a lot with acupuncture. I was very worried about a relapse, given the stress and the meds. Acupuncture addressed many problems in a way that Benson could tolerate with worrying about side effects.

I hope that Choe recovers without any further difficulties. Please keep us posted.
Very best to you,
Aden

I am sorry to hear about Choe's injury and I wish her a speedy recovery.
Ginger is on pred for the 3rd time in 2 years, she has had another relapse and she also stays on a small dosage for her arthritis and her blood work is checked every 6 months and has been just fine.
