Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - auto immune relapse causes

Hello,

My rottie/mixed 13 year old pooch almost died of auto immune disease about 5 years ago. out of nowhere, she became terribly ill and was admitted to the local animal hospital intensive care for several weeks. she recovered beautifully, but still remains on prednisone.
However, two weeks ago, i bought her greenies, something i had not done since before she became sick 5 years ago, and today i found myself in vet's office. full round of blood tests. deja vu: my dog's red blood count is low, she is lethargic, no appetite, vomiting, and NOT WELL! I have heard about greenies causing problems with intestinal blockage, but now i am starting to wonder if they may cause auto immune shut down in certain dogs??

anyone experienced this?? i am horrified that i may have caused my best friend to become seriously ill again!

Hi Jess,

I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet Aliya's relapse, I hope that since she recovered so well the first time, that she will do the same again. I don't know about the Greenies, but certainly anything can cause a reaction, especially in IMHA dogs. For some reason, their little systems are particularly sensitive. Where were the treats manufactured? I always check now, you just never know.

I hope you get to the bottom of it, and that Aliya is back to feeling better quickly.

I have also heard about greenies and blockages...which is why I won't buy them. I got one free and threw it away.
Can't imagine it would cause AIHA...but perhaps someone else has some ideas.

thank you for your kind responses. we are still waiting for all blood work results. Aliya remains lethargic and pale (her gums are almost white), yet she is a fighter and i have to believe that she will get through this. i know my tears can not be helpful to her recovery. thanks for the support, best wishes for all!

Dear Jess,
I am so sorry about your baby. Unfortunately we could spend days responding to all of the sad stories on this site. I wish I had an answer 4 U, but I don't. I had a beautiful Rottie years ago. Best wishes of healing & a happy life 2 U & your pooch. They are all angels!
