I was wondering if anyone is familiar with xiao chai hu jia qin jiao tang (Kan Essentials brand Benefit Hips and Knees Formula). Our 13 year old GSD/Cocker Spaniel mix, Sheba, has been having increasing mobility problems so we tried acupuncture this morning for the first time. The vet is a holistic vet and practices TCM. He suggested that Sheba might benefit from taking this formula. He said he believes it should be safe for dogs with IMHA and will be checking with several instructors he knows. I thought it wouldn't hurt to see if anyone on here has heard of or used this for their dogs. Sheba's IMHA is in remission and she has been meds free since December 2008. She is currently taking Deramaxx (12.5 to 25 mg per daily), DLPA, Dasuquin, and DermCaps ES. The holistic vet didn't think any of these should be problematic as far as adding the herbal formula. I would really like to find something that would help as things keep getting worse. We have her IMHA well in hand so if we could get this problem under control we'd be much happier. So if any of you know anything about this formula and how effective it is and if it's safe for dogs with IMHA we would love to hear from you! Thanks! Rita, Mike and Sheba

I haven't heard of this formula (or maybe I just forget) but I've heard LOTS of positive things about TCVM and AIHA/IMHA. I'd love to take Tessy to a TCVM but there are none near us where we are. I've also heard lots of good things about acupuncture. I really have yet to hear anything bad about either! I've also heard of several that use Knox Nutri-Joint supplement for bad joints. You can get this in the jello section of supermarkets but the older people usually scoop it up pretty fast. The vet you're using sounds like a pretty good one. Especially if he's willing to ask around and consult with others. Good Luck, Johnny & Tessy

Hi Rita, My IMHA dog Benson did quite well with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. He did not take the particular formulation that you mention but he took herbs for Hindquarter weakness, Pain relief and stagnation, strengthening yang, etc... After going into remission from IMHA (and going med-free), he subsequently developed other serious health issues such as IVDD and degenerative myelopathy. I was very nervous about possibly triggering a relapse with the additional stress and meds and I worked to find other methods of pain relief. We also used DLPA. Every dog is different (what worked for Benson might not be good for Sheba) and your practitioner sounds very good to be willing to investigate what's best for your dog. Good luck and keep us posted. Take care, Aden

Our holistic vet has Darcy, who was diagnosed with non-regenerative anemia over a year ago, on a Chinese herbal supplement for blood building and energy, but I don't know the names of the herbs it contains. For arthritis and joint issues, I started giving her Ark Naturals Joint Rescue chewables. Of course, I showed the bottle to the vet before I started giving it to Darcy and she gave her okay. The Ark Naturals have helped her greatly. We'd tried so many other things like Standard Process and PhyCox that just didn't work. The Ark Naturals have glucosamine chondrotin and other natural anti-inflammatory pain relievers such as boswellin, curcumin, yucca, etc. You might want to check out their website and also ask your holistic vet about them. Good luck.
