Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Antibiotic question

Just wondering if anybody has used Baytril on their dogs to treat infections. Tessy was in today to have a CBC, chem, and urinalysis done and the urinalysis came back showing a slight presence of blood (only a stick was done). She already did 2 weeks of Bioclav followed by 3 weeks of cephalexin with there still being a slight sign of blood on her stick. Now she was given a more powerful antibiotic to use Baytril. Anybody got any advise on this drug?
I was also just wondering if there were no WBC or RBC found on a micro if that would mean that it IS NOT a uti and maybe something different like stones?

Tessy's CBC results remained the same as last time. HCT 34.4, RBC 4.58, HGB 11.5, WBC 13.3, platelets 586 (up from 461).
Chem panel results will not be in until tomorrow so no clue yet.

Thanks,

Johnny,
Maybe it would be worth it doing a urine culture? Has that ever been done for Tessy? Kahlu had that done and it showed e-coli. With this result the infection could be targeted more precisely. They got his urine with a syringe directly from his bladder, which shows a more accurate, unspoiled result. The procedure sounds scary, but for Kahlu it was no worse than taking blood. He has been off antibiotics for a few days now and we will have to do a culture again on Thursday. It takes a few days for the results to come back and of course it is more expensive than the analysis they do at the vet. Kahlu has had UTI off and on since the onset of his illness, but in the whole picture I think this is the least of the problems. Once they are weaned off the medications and their immune systems kicks back in, our dogs will be able to fight of these infections once again.
The antibiotic Kahlu was on is clavamox (I think) sorry I don't know about Baytril.

Best wishes,

Johnny,
Any of these infections are hard to deal with for all of us. Cooper, like Tessy, went from one to another including Baytril to clear up an infection in his paw. It seems all any of them did was keep in from getting worse. Baytril is a powerful antibiotic and can be very effective with urinary infections. Cooper handled the drug very well but the reduction of Prednizone gave us the best results. Good luck with the results of your chem panel tomorrow.

Johnny,
Dr. Dodds recommend both Baytril and Clavamox. I think the Baytril has an age limit on it though. Not recommended for young adult dogs ask your Vet. I too would suggest the culture. There was a woman posting on here last year or so that had a heck of a time with UTI's and finally did the culture and found like Brigette said it was e-coli after none of the other antibiotics worked. It is so tough when you are supressing the immune system to stay ahead of any infection.
Best to you and Tessy

Hi Johnny,

Tiggs was on Baytril at least once, and also Doxy during the course of his IMHA.

He tolerated both very well, although at both times, he was on a LOT of drugs that were doing a lot of things to him.

Baytril seemed to help his poops too if I remember (?).

I hope you can get a good handle on the UTI's and blood issue.

Keep us posted,
melissa and tiggs
