Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - Angelo's 3 year AIHA anniversary

3 years ago on November 20, 2005 Angelo suddenly and without warning became a very sick 10 year old after having a very healthy life up until then. It
was the first time I have ever heard the words Auto Immune Hemolytic Anemia and Thrombocytopenia. Angelo's immune systerm suddenly started attacking his Red Blood Cells and Platelets. He was treated with very high doses of Prednisone and a "Chemo" drug and was very slowly weaned off of them by
April 2007. He has been in remission with his blood tests continuing to come back in the low end of normal. We never will know what caused it as he
wasn't recently vaccinated, exposed to any chemicals, had no cancer, tick diseases etc.

His prognosis was initally very poor but thankfully he was able to pull through and we are blessed that he is still here with us 3 years later. If
you would like to read about his recovery, his "Success Story" is posted
here:

I thank you all that have prayed for him and that continue to send your good
thoughts his way!

A huge congratulations to Angelo!!! We are sooooo very happy for you, Angelo is truly one lucky dog.
His picture in Dog Fancy Magazine is terrific and the caption really sums it all up. Let us know if he is signing autographs.

Angelo is such an inspiration to all of us, he really gives us hope.

Give him a big celebration hug from Ginger and I.

Jeanne,
It is so wonderful to read your story. My almost 2 year old golden Cooper came down with AIHA on Oct. 22, 2008. Out of the blue he was lethargic, which is totally out of character for him. By that Friday, Oct 24th he was in the hospital with a PCV level of 13. He was transfused that nite, put on 40 mg. prednisone twice a day along with Azathioprine 50 mg. once a day.He is also on 10mg famotidine 1 1/2 hrs. before prednisone, as well as 300 mg.doxycycline once a day as his Lyme test came back borderline. We recently switched vets because our old vet had no clue how to treat this disease and had no interest in educating herself. As of yesterday, his hematocrit was at 38 finally and all of his other numbers are within normal range. We will begin tapering the prednisone next Thursday. It is nice to know that these dogs can recover and lead fairly normal lives. It's just such a rough and expensive road til you get to the end.

Dear Jeanne -- congratulations to you and Angelo, and Archie, for this incredible milestone. I can't help but think of Angelo with amazement, because his fight to beat IMHA at his age, and with such gusto, is so inspirational. Please take care and continue to keep us posted on how things are going in your golden household. Sounds like a Frosty Paws kind of celebration in your house!
