John, I am so glad to hear Amy is feeling better! I would not use any flea or tick chemicals on her at all right now. I know that most vets think that stuff is harmless, but there have been so many cases where they were the trigger. Amy is so vulnerable right now, I would clearly steer away from any chemicals. Even essential oils could be very strong and could still effect her immune system at this point. I really don't have a solution. I have heard of diatomaceous earth (DE) that can deter fleas. I think Patrice has been using it with great success. She mentioned it at one time. This is something I will look into. Best wishes, Brigitte

Hi John - I don't know what you are feeding Amy but I've been making my Winston's food from Dr Dodd's liver cleanse from her clinic's website. It's suppose to support liver function. I add ALOT of garlic powder.... for it's flavor and it also has an effect on the body "taste" and "smell" which paracites don't like - or so I've been told. I know Winston's breath is Horrible now, but if I can avoid giving him any flea control, I'll put up with the smellies. Good Luck !

John I was very HAPPY to read that Amy is doing better. I too am at a loss as to what to do about flea control without using chemicals. I have heard apple cider vinegar works, garlic tabs made for dogs which contain a small amount of garlic, and Avon's Skin so Soft sprayed on the dogs mixed with water, whatever you decide to do check with your vet. Right now I have my two non AHIA dogs on the garlic tablets and Ginger on nothing but I may get her a flea collar. Tell Amy to keep up the good work:) Cheryl & Ginger

I'm with the others with regards to avoiding chemicals and vacinnes. The options above all sound really good! Garlic powder in the food. Skin so Soft by avon. Diatomaceous earth (DE) is also supposed to work really well fro fleas at least! I think there's a few different kinds available and I think it's the food grade you'd want. Others know more about this so hopefully they'll chime in. Regular checks would also be a very good thing. Before, during and especially after walks. Go over her with a fine toothed comb!

Oh, should probably say that it's a really good idea to keep the grass short and the bushes cut back in the yard. This helps LOTS!!!

What do you guys suggest about heartworm preventative? I usually start giving it to Riley May 1 but am VERRRRY nervous.
