We had Aiyana in yesterday for another CBC, I just got off the phone with our Vet. Bad news is we are dealing with AIHA again, so I guess we are back on the roller coaster with all of you. It's hard to believe that two of my dogs would end up with this dreadful disease, I can't help but think I have done something very wrong. Aiyanas PCV was 27.4 on Friday October 3rd, yesterday it was up to 29.8 our Vet is not thrilled with the number but happy it is going in the right direction. She is regenerating, her reticulocytes (I think, sorry I keep confusing all this stuff)are at 1.7, normal is between .5 and 1.5, so he is encouraged by that. She is only on 20 mg. of prednisone right now, but since she is moving in the right direction he does not want to rock the boat so to speak. I am to continue feeding her like I am, continue with the prednisone, ursodial, and ranitiodine, and take her back in a month for more blood work - unless she needs to be seen sooner. You are all in my prayers. blessings, Julie

Good luck with your Aiyana. At least she is going in the right direction with the PCV!

Julie, You should be so thankful that her PCV has increased. This is very positive news, just what I've been praying would happen with my little Darcy. Will keep you and Aiyana, and all the others on this forum in my prayers. Karen

Julie, Instead of thinking you have done something very wrong maybe you could look at it as you were given these dogs because it was known you would love them and do whatever you could for them. I agree no one should ever have to deal with this more than once though. It is a positve that her number is going up. How is she doing otherwise? Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Penny

EVERY NUMBER UPWARDS IS ENCOURAGING. GOOD LOOK. AND NO YOU HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING WRONG. HOPEFULLY SOMEDAY THERE WILL BE A BETTER LINE OF TREATMENT, AND EVEN BETTER, A PREVENTION.

| Hi Julie, I am so very sorry you are going through this a 2nd time! It just isn't fair, I know... I too was given two dogs in 7 years with this horrid disease.. I didn't think I would ever recover after my first dog died, and yet again, last month I lost my second dog.. Don't know why God thinks we can keep doing this, but for some reason, He gives us these sick dogs to love, care for, and then give back to Him way too soon.... It is wonderful that your dog is stable...will say many prayers that things continue to improve for you.. How old is Aiyanas and how did you realize she was sick?? Do you still have your first AIHA dog?? | Thanks all for your encouragement and support. AnnaMarie, I am sorry for your loss, I know how much it hurts. Aiyana is 12.5 was completely healthy, even just recently had a check up, her only problem was some arthritis due to hip dysplasia. I had been giving her just aspirin for the pain, but it was not working anymore, we had discussed pain meds at her check up, so I filled a prescription and started her on Meloxicam. That is when she became so ill, I am positive it was the meloxicam that did this to her, she experienced dangerous side effects to the drug. She seems to be much better now that the drugs are all out of her system... am hoping she continues to improve now. Unfortunately we lost our other AIHA dog, Wolfie a 15.5 year old Husky mix, 18 months ago to this disease. She fought for about a month, hers was brought on by becoming septic after pyometra and surgery. Her PCV never went above 20.. it was 15 when it was found, went up to 20 the day after they started her on prednisone in the hospital, and steadily decreased from there when I brought her home. She was on a much higher dose of prednisone and other drugs, they just were not working for her. Our poor Wolfie had so much going on with her at the time, they thought she had pancreatitis also, although she showed no symptoms. I could not feed her what she wanted or needed, so eating became a real problem. In 3 weeks Wolfie went from a healthy 46 lb. dog to 31 lbs. just before we let her go. At least in Aiyanas case she wants to eat.. and is doing well on the liver cleansing diet with a bit of kibble added in for more calories. Praying for all of you... blessings, Julie |
