Hello all, Many of you are new to this post. In March of this year Acadia was diagnosed with this horrible disease. Like most of you, I had never heard of it until then. I decided to try and start gathering data from everyone in hopes of finding common traits. We released the first results last quarter and I want to try and update them every quarter. I do not post the results on the site. I only send results to the individuals who participate in the survey. Each quarter I will send updates to everyone who has participated in any quarter survey unless you request that I not send them to you. If you want to participate, please answer the following questions and send to me at jmf31@tx.rr.com. I will release the compiled results in January. If you participated in the first survey, please contact me if I entered something incorrect, or if you have additional information to share. I did not ask for the veterinarian name the first time but feel this could be VERY helpful to the newly diagnosed. Wishing you all the best, Janet Survey Questionnaire Caretaker's Name: Email address: Pet's name: Breed: Sex: Spayed /Neutered? Pet's age now: If deceased, please include date of death. Pet's age when diagnosed: Weight when diagnosed: Diagnosis Date: Diagnosis: PCV at initial diagnosis: Did your pet have blood transfusions? If yes, how many and date given: History leading up to diagnosis: We are looking for past illnesses of your pet or conditions that might have led to the AIHA. Last vaccination date: What was your pet vaccinated for? Did you recently remove a tick from your pet? Was your pet recently stressed? Do you treat for fleas? If yes, what do you use? Do you treat for heartworms? If yes, what do you use? Do you feed your dog 'people' food that might contain onions and/or garlic? Name, location (city and state) and phone number of a Veterinarian you would recommend.

Janet, I have not done the survey yet, but intend to very soon. I want to encourage anyone who has not done it yet to participate. This could prove to be valuable information and a big step toward a cure. Thank you for this effort janet! Allison

Thanks for the survey results....I just took Daisy in for her blood draw and I was talking to the internal medicine vet about AIHA. I asked how many cases of this they see. She said it is very common as they get most of the referrals from the regular vets in the Bay area because most don't have all the blood products available that the specialists have. They see ONE CASE A WEEK on average. She said it seems to be somewhat seasonal and seems to affect females more than males. They see slightly more of some breeds than others, which seemed to correlate with your survey...i.e. cocker spaniels, dachsunds etc. so there is a genetic component to it.

Hello everyone, Hopefully you have your survey results by now. PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me if something is wrong. I will not think you are being picky. I make mistakes! For the ones who sent me information recently, I will do my best to recalculate results and send that out soon. Waiting until a new quarter is just too long. Regards, Janet

Bear was a previously healthy 5-year-old German Shepherd/Malamute mix unspayed female when she was diagnosed with AIHA, and died within a week. The vets couldn't identify a trigger, but I was just reading Beau's Challenge and noted that he had a history of seizures and had recently suffered a seizure before developing AIHA. Bear had suffered about 5 seizures in the 2 years prior to her death, and her last seizure had been about a week before. Perhaps the seizure was a trigger, or perhaps the tendency toward seizures relates to a tendency to AIHA. I will complete your survey.
