Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - AIHA/IMHA Studies

I thought I would post an update on the Meisha’s Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at Morris Animal Foundation:

for those of you who are interested. I know that many of you on this forum are regular contributors to this Fund.

Just last week I signed papers releasing money from the Fund for this years studies. The Layperson’s descriptions of these studies are as follows:

“Tissue Factor- A New Approach to Thrombosis in Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia”
Dr. Tracy Stokol, Cornell University Year 2 of 2

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a severe blood disorder that affects all breeds of dogs. Although dogs usually receive transfusion therapy to control their anemia, a frequent and often fatal complication of this disease is blood clot formation (thrombosis). Dogs with IMHA are often given anti-thrombotic drugs in the hopes of preventing these fatal blood clots. Determining what causes the clots would significantly improve veterinarians' ability to prevent them. This project aims to define the cause of abnormal clotting in dogs with IMHA, with the ultimate goal of developing an effective treatment strategy to improve patient survival.

This is the second year of a two year study and last year the MH Fund sponorsed a major part of this study as well.

The Second study is:
“Comparison of Thromboprophylactic Therapies on Outcome and Hemodymanics in Canine Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia: A Randomized Prospective Clinical Trial”

Dr. Kelly D. Mitchell, , University of Guelph, Year 1 of 2

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) causes life-threatening anemia in dogs. It occurs when a dog’s immune system destroys the animal’s normal red blood cells. Despite aggressive treatment to suppress the immune system, up to 50 percent of dogs die of the disease. The most common complication and cause of death in affected dogs is formation of blood clots that obstruct blood flow to vital organs. Many dogs with IMHA are given blood-thinning doses of aspirin, but the efficacy of this therapy is unknown and the drug hasn’t been compared to newer drugs. This clinical trial will evaluate the efficacy and safety of aspirin and two other blood thinners to determine which is most reliable in decreasing the incidence of blood clot formation and improving survival of dogs with IMHA.

End of study info

Since we all know that blood clots can be a very fatal thing in AIHA/IMHA, I think these are very important studies.

With the release of this money last week, in the last 11 months, the Meisha’s Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at MAF has sponsored $105,000 worth of studies on AIHA/IMHA, including the 3 Veterinary Student Scholar studies which are currently ongoing.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Meisha’s Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund #338 at MAF can do so by filling out this donation form

http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/donationform.htm

and sending it in to MAF, or donating online at the MAF Web site:

https://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/donate

Also one can donate and receive a Meisha’s Hope Bandanna by following the instructions on this page:

Thank you to all of you who donate to the Meisha’s Hope AIHA/IMHA Fund at MAF. There is no doubt in my mind that together we WILL find answers to the many questions that surround AIHA/IMHA.

Joanne,
It never ceases to amaze me how one person could start something that would benefit so many. Every study I hope puts us one step closer to finding a way to treat this awful disease and making all dogs that are diagnosed "success stories"
Thank You

Dear Joanne,

thank you so much for all you do!
Ripley and Kahlu proudly wore their bandanna's to an Agility fun match last night!
Is there a website about the studies that I could pass on to my vet? She is always eager to learn more.

Best wishes,

Brigitte & Kahlu

Brigitte,

These studies are so new that they are not on the MAF Web site as yet, but I will try and remember to post the URL for them when they do go online so you can share them with your vet.

Thank you so much. You have done a wonderful service to our pets and to us with your diligence with this disease. God bless you...and thank you.

Just a note to say that while the last Veterinary Student Scholar Study I posted is not a study totally focused on AIHA/IMHA I thought it was important to fund this study since many AIHA/IMHA dogs do receive cyclosporine and many times it is difficult to determine the right dosage of this drug. I felt this study might help solve that problem for dogs with AIHA/IMHA as well as other diseases that use Cyclosporine.

Hi Joanne

thank you for this information - as you know Phoebe has been at Royal Dick in Edinburgh for over a week now with exactly this condition - the blood clot in her lung almost killed her and if it wasn't for the prompt action by Alasdair and his team I don't think she would be with us today. She is now out of ITU and in the normal ward with a view to returning home at the weekend.

When my husband, Tony, goes to collect her I am giving him print outs of all your information to give to Alasdair in order that something in their may prevent this happening to Phoebe and other sufferers in the future.

I will certainly be donating towards this research as soon as I am able (vets fees so astronomical at present and insurance have not decided whether they are going to pay yet!!). So as soon as we are able we shall be donating to the research - rest assured!
