Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - ? about reallly bad gas

Wylie has had extremely bad gas for about a month. I did a search and Linda in NC said her dogs was caused by a bacteria in her stool. Last night it was so embarrasing, I had company over and she about cleared us out of the room

Any other ideas on what I should ask the vet. She just stopped taking pred and on nothing else except milk thistle.

THanks

Have you considered digestive enzymes? Maybe a daily spoonful of plain nonfat yogurt?

Laurie,
How is her stool, Holly had really running (mucous) stools. But she had the gas for about 2 weeks prior to that, so maybe the bacteria was building.

You could maybe just take a stool sample to the vet that is what we did for Holly they tested it and gave us the pills metronidazole 250mg. One every 12 hours, but by the second day the gas was gone, we actually saved a few of the pills just case it happens again. I know it is really bad, a few times we did have to leave the room.

I know we had another dachshund in Florida that had such bad gas also we could not stand it, and the vet gave us something for her, but have no idea what that was.

Good luck with it.

Wylie is on both probiotics and digestive enzymes. She likes to eat turkey poop, I am wondering if she picked up something there. I hope to get a sample tomrrow and drop it off.

oops I forgot to mention, her stools today were a little runny so thats not normal for her

Any change in diet could cause gas/runny stool. Sweet potato and pumpkin are both good for diarrhea and constipation. I used to give Darcy green beans, but they gave her terrible gas.

We tried the pure pumpkin for her runny stools, we always keep a can handy, but it did not help for the gas or runny stools.

Laurie,
In many cases with dogs, undigested grains (and other foods) make their way to the colon and bacteria there have a grand time with it. This creates lots of stinky gas. This is the most common cause. There is always bacteria in the colon, we cannot eliminate it.

But... It's not always that simple. Why is she not digesting food that she could digest before? Dogs can have all kinds of digestive problems, but one common problem after lots of antibiotics is small intestine bacterial overgrowth SIBO. Bad bacteria flourish in the small intestine and can create inflammation and improper digestion. Probitotics etc aren't really able to take hold because the balance is too far tipped.

There are several ways to approach this. You can immediately visit a vet and get some tests done. They might prescribe a 10 day dose of metrondiazole to see if that helps. And in many cases this is all that is needed.

You could simplify her diet and remove anything that might be causing the problem, by elimination. Start with one protein that she isn't used to having and one starch for a week. See if that eliminates the gas and resolves the diarrhea. If she hasn't had lamb before or rarely that is a good one to try. For the starch try cooked potatoes. If there are no problems at the end of the week, add in another protein. When you have done this for about 3-4 weeks you should have a better idea what are the foods that are irritating. Repeat until you find the offending item.

In any case, it would be a good idea to work with your vet on this. Right now is not a good time to have nutritional deficiencies.

Laurie,
You said she likes to eat Turkey Poop, our vet told us that Rabbit and Squirrel poop is high in bacteria, so maybe Turkey is also??

I have I told you guys "ROCK" I just cant thank everyone enough. And thanks Linda, about the bacteria, I would never have pushed to go further than a parasite exam.

So I finally got a stool sample this morning, Wylie was being uncoooperative the last few days.

I talked to the vet and said I wanted to test for bacteria, not just for parasites, he is like her stool looks good and the test is about $200, I said I want it done, he said I will do avisial exam to see if there are any spherites and that will save on the expensive test.

Sure enough she has some spherites and being put on metronsozoidle dont know how to spell that one.

Will let you know how she does

THANK YOU
