Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - ? about blood in urine

I am asking this for my other dog Jake, a 13 year old male lab, since so many of your dogs have had this problem. I noticed about a month or so ago, occasional little puddles, maybe a couple of TBSP of what I thought was water from Jake being in the pool and recently realized, he was leaking urine when relaxed and thought due to old age. Last week-end I noticed many, so I took him to the vet on Monday.

He had blood in his urine so they thought a bacterial infection so he is on cephlaxin, I am surprised they did not do a culture.

So my question is how long does it take until there is no blood visual in the urine?

THanks

Laurie,
I am sorry Jake has this problem. I know Patrice would be the expert on that one, but given his age I would also look at bladder stones. If the right antibiotic is given and indeed it is just a UTI it should clear up in a few days.
Best wishes,

Lauri, Like Brigitte was saying Patrice would be the expert here. I don't know if cephalexin would be the drug of choice for a UTI though. They should have picked a more broad spectrum drug for it. You should notice a difference in a few days but make sure you finish the meds and then get him checked 2-3 days afterward. If it is still a problem then they'll probably do a sensitivity and culture or maybe even check for stones/crystals.
Perhaps a chem profile sometime might be usefull to check out the kidney values.

Sending some get well vibes for Jake. Get better buddy.

I read what can also cause this is tick bites, which he has had, he does wear the preventic collar which from what I understand, the ticks will bite and then drop off. LOL the experience of chasing the dog around with a bowl.

Johnny, Jake was sick last month actually both Wylie and Jake, Wylie first, they put her on doxy, then Jake was on it. I asked about that antibiotic and the vet said it doesnt hit e coli bacteria, if that is the case.

Probably a urinary tract infection. Dogs are notorious for hiding these. It's important to culture for these and use the correct antibiotic. Using one that isn't right is a waste of money.

Sometimes to get a clean sample the vet will use a long syringe into the wall of the bladder from the dog's flank. It sounds horrible, but isn't really and most dogs don't experience discomfort.

If after all that, it doesn't seem to resolve, then checking for stones is the next step. Often seen on an x-ray.

Finally, tumors can be a cause of this. In an older dog this is a possibility. If this were me though, I would take it one step at a time.

Here's a good look at many of the tests and conditions:

Patrice, thanks for that link, intersting it says its very unusual for a male neutured dog to have a bladder infection. Surprising I couldn't find a lot of info in my search. He has also been up and down a lot at night like he is in discomfort but not showing obvious pain, and last night he slept the entire night. So if its a bladder infectiona and are as painful as the one I had, he just didnt show the pain.

Thanks for all your responses.
