Canine Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA & IMHA) - 4 month old puppy with anemia

Hello
I just found this forum today. I have a 4 months old puppy who has an anemia, but vets so far cannot tell me what kind of anemia it is. It could be IMHA but they say that so young pups usually do not get it. Is it true?

Barbara,

I am so sorry to hear that your 4 month old puppy has anemia. While there are many causes for anemia, in the many years I have been doing the Meisha'a Hope AIHA/IMHA Web site:

http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/

I have seen many puppies some of them as young as yours who have been diagnosed with AIHA/IMHA. Many times with AIHA/IMHA in a puppy the disease is as a result of vaccinations. But the good news is that with puppies who have AIHA/IMHA most of them have the strenght and stamia to recover successfully.

If you have not read my Web site whose URL is listed above I would urge you to do so when you can. Be sure to follow the links listed on the first page to many other sites on AIHA/IMHA that will help you learn about the disease and do read the Success Stories pages. They will show you what has worked for other dogs in terms of treatment options. I know that there are at least a couple of puppies featured on these Success Stories pages.

If your vet cannot tell you what kind of anemia you are dealing with it may be very wise to get another opinion from a veterinary internal medicine specialist so you will know what you are dealing with and how to treat it.

Dear Barbara,

It is possible. Our puppy, Henri, was diagnosed at 5-months of age. It is extremely rare to see IMHA in puppies but not unheard of. After running every test, it was determined he had vaccine-induced IMHA. Did you pup have any vaccines in the past month? Keep us posted.

Warmly,

Henri, West Highland White Terrier, 19-months old, diagnosed with vaccine-induced IMHA on 02/26/09, successfully weaned off all IMHA meds.

Hi Barbara,
How sorry I am to hear about your pup, what is his name and breed? We have a puppy called Archie and he was 8 months when diagnosed, lucky for us our vet had known of another puppy to have this and treated him appropriately. At times we thought we would lose him as he was quite poorly. On Monday he had his first birthday and is very well although still on low dosage meds. I hope you get your puppy sorted. Have hope and do use this website as it keeps things in perspective.

Hi Barbara, so sorry to hear of yet another pup that's sick. Do you know what the vet did all as far as testing goes? Coombs? Did they at least look at the blood under a microscope? There's several things that can cause anemia and most experienced vets *should* be able to rule most things out. If I were you I would seek the help of a specialist. Are you near any veterinary teaching universities? These are usually the best place to get cutting edge advise and help.

Did they give her any drugs to take at all? You should really find out more info. This is a VERY serious disease regardless the type. Time is an important issue when treating this also.

Hope to hear back from you soon. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
